Winston Salem Youth Hockey Association

2023-2024 Mites - Co-Ed

Welcome

Welcome

The 6U/8U Carolina Jr Thunderbirds team is for boys and girls born in 2015 or later that would like to learn and play competitive or recreational hockey.

OVERVIEW

Our 6U/8U programs offer a fantastic value for our players to develop their skills and love for the game as they practice twice a week and participate in games several weekends per month.

Practices will be structured so that players have the opportunity to practice with their peer age/ability group (boys and girls combined) as well as with their gender cohort (8U and 6U combined). This gives our players the best of both worlds where they can spend part of practice with players at the same skill level and part with players that they may more naturally develop friendships with.

This year we are introducing the I40 Mites House League! Greensboro, Hillsboro and Winston-Salem will each host 3 games and invite the other two associations for 9 games in total. The goal of this league is to reduce travel and its associated costs while giving our players opportunities to play teams of similar skill. We will also host 3 home jamborees and expect to attend 3-5 away jamborees.

The 8U program offers players the opportunity to play games against other competitive teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Moderate travel is expected as we participate in our new House League and away jamborees.

The 6U program travel will be limited to our Mites House League (Greensboro and Hillsboro). Away jamboree participation is dependent on competition level and team size. Games will be against other 6U opponents in a scramble format primarily to give the players more puck touches and a greater opportunity for success in games. High-skilled 6U players may have the opportunity to play up with the boys or girls 8U group in some games.

SCHEDULE

Starting September 6, we'll have 1 on-ice practice per week from 6:30-730pm at the Greensboro IceHouse. We are working on securing an additional off-ice practice at Hanes Hosiery Community Center in Winston-Salem on Saturday or Sunday.

Starting on October 22, we will begin two on-ice practices per week at the Annex - Sundays from 3:45 - 4:45pm and Wednesdays from 6:15 - 7:15pm.
